The Wachau Trail is built around Krems an der Donau, at the eastern gateway to the Wachau, the Danube valley between Krems and Melk that is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. Runners climb from the riverside into terraced vineyards, past dry stone walls and along forest tracks high above the water. Four distances run on the same October Saturday: 10 km, 24 km, 101 km and 161 km. The shorter races stay close to town, while the two long ultras head deep into the valley and spend many hours on the terraces and hill paths. The ground underfoot mixes approach roads, vineyard tracks and rooty forest sections.
