Runners cover 120.71 km across the desert country around Dunhuang in Gansu province, China, on a solo, single-stage ultra with a 22 hour time limit. The route rolls gently, with 778 m of elevation gain and 312 m of descent, so the challenge comes from the distance and the exposed terrain rather than big climbs. Other questions
Participation is solo. Each runner covers the full 120.71 km single-stage course alone, supported by the event's aid stations and crew.
Early October in the Gobi brings wide temperature swings, with warm daytime conditions and cold nights. Runners should be prepared for strong sun, wind and blowing sand, as well as a significant drop in temperature after dark.
Crew access is normally arranged around the aid stations, so support teams should plan to meet runners at those points. Exact crew rules and any restricted sections are set out by the organiser in the race briefing.
The organiser monitors conditions in the desert and can alter the route, delay the start or stop the race if safety requires it. Any decisions and their consequences for entries are communicated through the Ultra Gobi channels.
