The Tuscany Crossing sends runners and walkers through the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of rolling hills, cypress avenues, medieval villages and thousand-year-old abbeys. Four trail distances of 161 km, 103 km, 53 km and 15 km start in Castiglione d'Orcia and pass through the areas of Montalcino, San Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza, with walking routes over the three shorter courses. The ground alternates between dirt tracks, woodland paths, flower-filled meadows and fords, while the rivers Orcia, Vivo and Asso and the thermal springs of Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo sit along the way. Refreshment points serve Tuscan bread, pecorino cheese, cured meats, traditional desserts, wine and extra virgin olive oil, staffed largely by local volunteers. Launched in 2013, the event returns for its XIV edition on 16 and 17 April 2027.
