Overview

Trékyllisheiðin is a trail race held in the Strandir region of Iceland, organized by Skíðafélag Strandamanna. The race finishes at the club's ski cabin at Brandsholt in Selárdalur, about 16 km north of Hólmavík.

The practical side

Route

The longest race (48 km) starts at the community center in Árnes in Trékyllisvík. From there, run along a gravel road (Highway 643, Strandavegur) to the northwest, about 3 km. After passing the farm Melar, turn left onto a jeep road (Ófeigsfjarðarvegur) that goes over Eyrarháls towards Ingólfsfjörður. About when reaching the high plateau (about 2.3 km from Strandavegur, about 200 m ascent), turn left onto a rough track that initially goes south and southwest onto Trékyllisheiði. The run is north of the mountain Glissa and on that section the route reaches its highest point, just over 500 m above sea level. After 13.2 km, you reach a hill northwest of Glissa and there is the first drink station. After about 18 km, turn left west of Reykjarfjarðarvatn and run south along the eastern side of Búrfell near the edges into Reykjarfjörður, crossing small rivers (Mjóadalsá, Breiðadalsá, and Óveiðisá). At Búrfellsvatn south of Búrfell is drink station no. 2, about 25.6 km from the start. Then the route continues south across the actual Trékyllisheiði, following jeep tracks most of the way. After about 34 km, cross Goðdalsá, which can be high in meltwater and wet weather. A guard will be at the river. There is drink station no. 3. At 40 km, pass a junction where a jeep track from Bjarnarfjarðarháls joins (where 16.5 km runners enter). There is the fourth drink station. After that, the descent steepens towards Steingrímsfjörður. Enter Selárdalur near the abandoned farm Bólstaður, wade across Selá river (with assistance if needed), and take the final sprint up the valley to the ski cabin at Brandsholt, where the race ends.
