The John Muir Way Ultra Marathon follows Scotland's Golf Coast along the John Muir Way, a long distance trail that threads past championship links courses towards Dunbar, the birthplace of John Muir. Runners cover 50 kilometres over a genuine mix of surfaces, from coastal path and links terrain to quieter trail sections. A two person team relay splits the same route into two 25km legs for those who want to share the day. The organisers present the event as a welcoming step into the endurance world of ultra running.

Other questions
The race follows the John Muir Way along Scotland's Golf Coast, running past championship links golf courses on the way towards the birthplace of John Muir. The route sits in East Lothian, on Scotland's east coast.
The organisers present the event as one that many runners see as their step into the endurance world of ultra running, so it is aimed partly at people moving up from marathon distance for the first time. The relay option is a gentler way in if 50km solo feels like too big a jump.
The relay is a pair event covering the same 50km route as the solo race, split into two 25km legs. One runner takes the first leg and their partner takes the second.
Yes. The solo 50km race is capped at 425 places and the team relay at 45 teams. Places are allocated in price bands as entries come in, so entering earlier is cheaper.
The event page does not publish a mandatory kit list, so check the organiser's own website and your race day information pack before the event. As a minimum for a coastal 50km in early March, plan for changeable Scottish weather, with layers, waterproofs, enough fluid for the sections between aid points and a phone.
