Both routes set off from the John Ruskin School in Coniston and head out across the Lake District fells on a circular course. The 24 mile loop follows the Cumbria Way to Ambleside by way of Tarn Hows and Oxen Fell, returns along Loughrigg Terrace through the Langdale Valley, and climbs back to Coniston over the Coniston Fells. The 50 mile event repeats that loop before turning into the quieter Duddon Valley, climbing the Walna Scar Road, passing Broughton in Furness and returning along the shores of Coniston Water. The ground underfoot is a mix of valley paths, bridleway, old railway line and rough open fell, and the route is unmarked so map and compass work is part of the day. Walkers set off at 08:00 and runners at 10:00, and the 50 mile field is out overnight from Saturday into Sunday.
