Screaming Monkey 100 takes runners onto the trails of northwest Louisiana across a weekend, with 10K, 25K, 50K, 100K and 100 mile options on the programme. The course rolls over mountain bike single track and equestrian trails and drops through a ravine that feels out of place in Louisiana. Runners share the woods with the bells of a nearby veterans cemetery and the chimps at Chimp Haven, whose calls carry across the course. It works as an approachable first ultra at the shorter distances and as a long, patient day out at 100K and 100 miles.

Other questions
The race was put together with first timers in mind. The 10K and 25K give a taste of the trails, the 50K is the classic first ultra step, and the 100K and 100 mile options are there for runners who want the full day and night out.
Two things. The bells of the veterans cemetery next door ring across the course, and the chimps at Chimp Haven can be heard calling from their sanctuary. Both are part of the character of the race.
