The Santorini Experience sets trail running and open water swimming against the volcanic backdrop of the island's caldera. The running races start and finish in Oia and trace cliffside paths through Imerovigli and Firostefani, mixing soil trail with inset stones, asphalt and paved sections above the Aegean. Swimmers cover 2.4 km from the harbour of the volcanic islet to the pier of Fira's old port, with lifeguards and watercraft alongside them. The event is organised by the Municipality of Thira with ActiveMedia Group and brings amateur and professional athletes together for two days of racing.

Other questions
Yes. The weekend is built around both disciplines, with the open water swim on Saturday and the trail races on Sunday, so runners and swimmers can combine the two.
Swimmers should be at the old port at least one hour before the scheduled starting time. Boats then transfer them to the starting area in the harbour of the volcano.
The trails mix soil path with stones set into it, asphalt road and paved path. Some sections are loose and slippery with very steep gradients, so the organisers ask runners to stay as far to the left of the trail as possible on the climbs.
Experienced lifeguards and watercraft are stationed along the whole crossing. If you feel unwell or cannot continue, raise both hands and move them up and down, or swim to the nearest watercraft.
Yes. An extra classification is added for swimmers who wear wetsuits, alongside the main categories.
