Starting in Elliðaárdalur valley, the course follows asphalt trails through some of Reykjavik's most scenic areas, away from traffic. Runners pass through Fossvogur valley, descend to the seafront, skirt Öskjuhlíð hill, and continue along the shore past Nauthóll with views over the ocean and Snæfellsjökull glacier. After 10.5 km the route turns and returns the same way; marathoners cover the loop twice. The course is mostly flat with small elevations after 3 and 4.5 km and crosses only two small streets each way.
