Nisyros 26.5K leads runners out of Mandraki and into the volcanic landscape of Nisyros, a UNESCO Global Geopark in the Aegean. The route follows geotrail G6 to the Rhyodacite viewpoint at Profitis Ilias, turns towards Argos and Agia Eirini on geotrail G5, then enters the Lakki area where the hydrothermal craters show the activity that shaped the island. From Nikia, the Volcanological Museum and Emporios the course runs through the Caldera before returning to the finish at Iroo Square in Mandraki. Underfoot is an ever-changing mix of volcanic rock, dirt paths and footpaths, with around 1,162 m of climbing spread across the 26.5 km and a 12 hour 30 minute time limit to complete it. The race forms part of the first Volcanic GeoRun, an event built around introducing runners to the island's geological, natural and cultural heritage.

Other questions
Yes. The Nisyros 26.5K is being held for the first time in 2026 as part of the Volcanic GeoRun, inside the Nisyros UNESCO Global Geopark.
The route mixes dirt paths, footpaths and rough volcanic ground with sustained climbing, so trail shoes with good grip are a sensible choice. Sections of the caldera and the geotrails can be loose and uneven.
Weather on an exposed volcanic island can change quickly, and the organisers may adjust or stop the race if conditions are unsafe. Any decisions and updates are communicated by the organisers, so follow their channels in the days before the event.
The most accessible viewpoints are the start and finish at Mandraki's Iroo Square, the Profitis Ilias viewpoint, the hydrothermal craters in the Lakki area and the village of Nikia. The island is compact, so moving between these spots by road is straightforward.
The event combines a sporting challenge with direct experience of Nisyros' geological and natural heritage. Its routes link the island's geotopes and aim to promote Nisyros as a destination for geotourism and sports tourism while supporting the local economy and the protection of the environment.
