The Newton Hills Trail Races have been run in Newton Hills State Park since 2002 and now offer two distances, a 6 mile route and a 2 mile route, both starting from the Blue Diamond Trail Head at 9am. The 6 mile course takes in most of the park's trail network, including the Woodland Trail loop, and brings plenty of elevation change on dirt single-track, while the 2 mile option keeps things short and welcoming for newcomers and families. October is a beautiful time in the park, with autumn colour across the wooded hills. The event is organised by the Sioux Falls Area Running Club and is part of the club's Trail Series, with age division points on offer across the season.

The race is held on Saturday 10 October 2026 at Newton Hills State Park in South Dakota, starting from the Blue Diamond Trail Head. Both races go off at 9am.
The member discount code was sent to all current members when registration opened. If you are a current member and need the code, email [email protected] and the club will send it to you.
Yes. Go to the Deer Dash registration page and choose the All 4 Races option for $170, or the 4 Race Under 18 option for $70. Signing up for all four at once earns a special swag gift that is not given with individual race entries.
Yes. The club can switch you between the long and short races at any of the four series events. Just send a note up to a week before race day and your registration will be adjusted.
First place in each age division at each series race earns 10 points, second earns 9, and so on down to tenth place earning 1 point. At the end of the series the points are tallied in each age division and gift cards go to the top three male and female finishers. Overall male and female champions also receive a framed picture of their favourite course. Age divisions are 29 and under, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59 and 60 and over.
