The Mystery Mountain Marathon and 12 Miler cover difficult, sometimes technical trails over and around Fort Mountain in north Georgia, with roughly 5,500 feet of climbing on the marathon course. Both races open with a flat, quick loop around the lake before joining the rocky and rooty Big Rock trail and the single-track Gahuti trail that traces the edge of the park just below the summits of Cohutta and Fort Mountains. Runners climb to the top of the mountain, pass the mysterious rock wall built over 1,000 years ago, then descend on trails where the climbing is far from finished. Marathoners add the 301 loop with its old mines, waterfalls and rhododendrons, while 12-milers head back around the lake to finish. Post-race food and drink are served at the picnic shelter, and a portion of the proceeds supports Fort Mountain State Park.

Other questions
It is highly recommended that marathon runners carry a water bottle. The distances between Bunker Hill and Far Out, and between Far Out and Last Gasp, take some runners over an hour. All runners should plan their fluid intake around the published aid station mileages.
Bears have been spotted along many sections of the Mystery Mountain Marathon course, so be bear aware. Observe wildlife from a distance and do not approach or feed them. Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them, and do not leave litter on the course, as anyone caught littering will be disqualified.
No. Fort Mountain trails remain open during the race and you may encounter hikers, and bikers or horses on the marathon course. Be courteous, announce your approach so others can move off the trail, and pass other runners with a clear verbal call such as may I pass, trail left or trail right.
The combined field for the marathon and 12 Miler is limited to 250 participants. GUTS members receive a $5 discount on entry, and entries received before 19 September are the only ones guaranteed their requested shirt size.
Yes. If you are not running, or you have someone travelling with you who would like to help, email [email protected] with the subject line MMM Volunteer and the organisers will let you know what is needed.
