The longest option of the day, packing 1800 m of climbing and 1800 m of descent into 24 km of mountain terrain above Laveno Mombello.

The practical side

Terrain

5% asphalt, 40% dirt/gravel, 55% trail. Minimum altitude 193 m, maximum 1,117 m at Monte Crocetta. Course marked with orange ribbons and yellow signs with red arrows. Expected first finishers at 11:00.

Route

From Laveno Mombello (193 m) two kilometres of asphalt lead to the steep ridge path up to Sass Barbè and the Cresta dei Pizzoni di Laveno (about 1.5 km of exposed ridge above Lake Maggiore); descent to Rifugio Adamoli (km 8, first aid station and first cut-off), climb over the Monte Nudo ridge to Monte Crocetta (1,117 m), fast descent to Vararo and on to Casere (second aid station), then a farm track to the foot of Sasso del Ferro for the final climb of about 400 m D+ on the Vertikal Sass de Fer path; long descent with a singletrack back to Casere (third aid station) and a cobbled mule track into Laveno Mombello, finishing on the lakefront by the tourist harbour.

ParkingStewards direct arrivals to available car parks: Via XXV Aprile, Laveno (with showers and changing rooms, linked to the finish by shuttle); Via della Repubblica, Laveno; Via del Gaggetto, Laveno; Via Miralago, Laveno. A camper van area is available in Via Cavour 55, Gavirate, on the shore of Lake Varese – limited pitches, no booking, pay on site.

ShuttleFree shuttles run from the finish area (end of the finish avenue) to the sports centre in Via XXV Aprile, about 2 km away, which has showers and changing rooms for athletes.

Public transportThe town sits on the eastern shore of Lago Maggiore and is linked to the Varese province and to Milan by road and rail.

Before you enter

Collecting your numberSaturday 31 October from 13:00 to 17:00 and Sunday 1 November from 07:00, at Parco Hotel de Charme, Via degli Angeli, Laveno Mombello. Bib collection closes at 08:00 for the 15K/24K and at 08:30 for the 9K; a photo ID is required and bibs can be collected for a friend with a copy of their ID.
