La Roche Courbon Nature Race is a weekend dedicated to outdoor sport on the estate of the Château de la Roche Courbon in Saint-Porchaire, one of the most beautiful sites in Charente-Maritime. Saturday evening opens with a 9 km route at nightfall that slips through the vaulted halls of the castle and its torch-lit gardens before finishing around a glass of mulled wine. Sunday's races, a 14 km discovery trail, a 23 km short trail, an 8 km hike and children's races over 1.2 km and 2.4 km, cross the many faces of the domain: about 80 percent of the route is single-track woodland, with streams, marshland, prehistoric caves, the celebrated stone sea and, new this year, a Gallo-Roman camp with vertiginous slopes. The ground is 95 percent lawn, paths and trails through parks, woods, fields and quarries. The finish comes in the French gardens of the château, through its vaulted halls and under a plant arch. The event counts towards the Challenge Trails de Charente-Maritime.
