The Backcountry Wilderness Half Marathon covers 13.1 miles of dirt trail through the Highlands Ranch backcountry, a rolling landscape of open grassland and scrub on the Colorado Front Range. The race starts at 9:00 am from 11033 Monarch Blvd in Lone Tree and is now in its 16th year, with a field that runs for a share of the prize purse. The fastest man and woman each take home $400, with $200 and $100 going to second and third. Ground underfoot is unpaved trail throughout, and the day is built around a single morning start.
