The Gede Pangrango Ultra Marathon sends runners through the rainforest and volcanic slopes of Gede Pangrango National Park in West Java, setting off from Sukabumi at 3am. The 47km route climbs and descends around 4,350 metres in total across jungle paths, ridges and steep park trails. Runners have 15 hours to reach the finish, so the day stretches from darkness into the heat of the afternoon. It is a small, grassroots mountain ultra rather than a mass road event, with a handful of finishers recorded in each edition so far.
