G3 No.1 is the opening round of a long-running Surrey winter trail series, staged from Newlands Corner above Guildford and now in its 23rd year. The route is entirely off road: it crosses open meadows before dropping down steep, muddy descents, climbing back up on deep sandy trails and passing through beech and pine forest, with the return leg finishing on a tough climb to the line. Two distances, 10k and 15k, start together at 08:00 and share the same marked and marshalled trail until a split point; runners should expect horses, dog walkers and mountain bikers on the shared paths and take care at live road crossings. Finishers collect a medal and brownies at the finish, with free parking, a water station and two onsite cafes back at Newlands Corner.
