The course climbs through the forest trails of Luniao Mountain near Hangzhou, combining ancient stone steps, steep slopes and open ridge paths. Runners travel through bamboo groves and stands of red autumn foliage, with the ridge line offering wide views across the mountains. The ground underfoot changes constantly between stone, packed earth and rooted trail, and the day is built around sustained climbing and descent with 1151 metres of ascent. The race is also run as a training match, giving runners from the region a demanding benchmark for their form.
