The race is run over three consecutive stages through the mountains around Volcán Lanín, with two overnight camps in between. Stage 1 starts after a bus transfer from San Martín de los Andes, Stage 2 starts from the first camp, and Stage 3 starts inside the second camp and finishes in the centre of San Martín de los Andes.
There are two camps in the mountains where runners rest between stages. The first camp hosts the start of Stage 2, and after Stage 2 all runners are bused to Camp 2, from which Stage 3 begins.
The routes are intentionally challenging and require significant physical exertion, so runners must have excellent physical training and previous experience in adventure races.
Skipping a checkpoint leads to disqualification from the race unless the runner goes back to pass through it. Checkpoints are staffed by a member of the organisation, though in specific cases a checkpoint may be marked only by a signal.
