Runners set off from the Cambus O'May forestry car park on the north side of the A93, midway between Dinnet and Ballater, and follow marked forest paths for 7.5 km with 200 m of climb. Because it is run in darkness in midwinter, competitors must carry a good headtorch plus full body cover, a map and compass.
