Chap'Trail is held in the small village of Haut-de-Bosdarros in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, on the edge of the Pyrenean foothills in south-west France. Participants choose between a 21 km trail and a 10 km course, with a third 10 km walking category for those who would rather hike the route than race it. The event takes place on a Sunday in late February, when the foothills are quiet and the ground is usually soft, and any snow or ice tends to sit on the higher ground rather than in the valley. All three starts share the same village base, so the day is compact and easy to follow for runners and the people supporting them.

Other questions
Yes. A walking category called Chaptrail Marche 10km is offered alongside the two timed races, so walkers can take on the 10 km route at hiking pace.
The two timed races share the same village base in Haut-de-Bosdarros but cover different amounts of ground, with the 21 km naturally spending longer on the surrounding paths. The 10 km is the shorter and more accessible option for a first trail outing.
Trail shoes with decent grip are the sensible choice. A February race in the Pyrenean foothills usually means damp, soft ground, and the higher sections of the longer route can be muddy or slippery.
Late February in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques is cool and changeable, with a real chance of rain and of snow lingering on higher ground. Layering and a light waterproof jacket are worth carrying, and conditions can shift during the day.
