The Blackdown Hill Challenge is based at Fernhurst Recreation Ground on the West Sussex border, where an event village, free parking and a family friendly atmosphere set up the morning. The headline 10K trail race climbs from the recreation ground up to the Temple of the Winds on Blackdown, taking in around 866 feet of ascent and opening out to far-reaching views over Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. A shorter 4.5K adult trail race offers a gentler version of the same ground, while the day opens with junior 2K and 5K races for children and teenagers. The event is licensed by the Trail Running Association and run under UK Athletics rules.

The race is presented by Midhurst Milers in conjunction with Fernhurst Recreation Ground Trust. It is licensed by the Trail Running Association and held under UK Athletics rules.
There are four races. The junior 2K is for children aged 6 to 11, the junior 5K is for runners aged 11 to 15 who must be 11 before 31 August, and the adult 4.5K and 10K trail races are open to anyone aged 16 and over.
The 10K includes a climb of around 866 feet up to Blackdown, so it suits runners with some off-road experience. The event overall is billed as beginner friendly, and the 4.5K adult race offers a much less demanding alternative on the same morning.
Every race is a trail run rather than a road race. Expect off-road paths and tracks around Fernhurst Recreation Ground, with the 10K heading out onto the higher ground of Blackdown.
Trail shoes with decent grip are the sensible choice for the off-road surfaces, especially on the 10K climb and descent. The junior races stay close to the recreation ground, so ordinary running shoes work fine there.
