The Bank Jateng Borobudur Marathon starts and finishes at the Lumbini Park Complex beside the Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java. Runners set off with the temple behind them and follow an out-and-back tarmac route that winds through the rolling Magelang countryside, past rice fields, dense tropical vegetation and traditional Javanese villages, on a course profile that mixes flat stretches with gentle hills. Three distances are on offer, the full marathon, the half marathon and a 10 km race, and each one begins and ends near the temple. The event is AIMS certified, carries a World Athletics Label and is run with the close involvement of local residents, who volunteer, organise and turn out along the course to cheer. It has been held annually for years and has become a celebration of sport, local culture and community pride in Central Java.
