The route passes Rivington Pike, Winter Hill, Scotsman's Post (site of a 1868 murder), Darwen Tower, and more.
In 1896, a mass trespass on Winter Hill occurred, predating the Kinder Scout trespass by 36 years. It played a role in opening access to moorlands.
