The Kamphaeng Phet Marathon World Heritage Run takes runners through one of Thailand's most storied landscapes, with the marathon, half marathon, 10 km and 5 km routes threading past 13th century ruins listed by UNESCO, along the Ping river, through forest and beside rice fields. The courses start and finish in the Nai Mueang area of Kamphaeng Phet town, where streets close for the morning. Runners set off before dawn, the marathon at 03:30 and the shorter distances following through to 06:00. Volunteers, drink and nutrition stations, medical support and traditional Thai music and dance line the way, and the local community turns out to cheer. Four distances mean the day works for first timers and seasoned marathoners alike.
