The Austria Backyard Ultra takes place on a 6,706 metre loop in Frankenmarkt, Upper Austria, with 132 metres of climbing on runnable forest and meadow paths mixed with short road stretches. At the first stroke of every hour the field sets off together on the same lap, and the race only ends once the second to last runner has stopped. Free camping is available directly beside the start and finish, and showers, drinks and food for runners are included in the entry fee.

In a backyard ultra everyone sets off on the same lap at the top of every hour. Anyone not on the start line for the next hour is out, and the race continues until only one runner remains.
The race ends when the second to last runner drops out. The last runner standing wins, and the planned duration of the event is 41 hours.
