It is classified as a trail race, run on the trails of New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia. Expect natural surfaces, roots and rocks, and long sustained climbs rather than road or path running.
The race is held in mid February in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia, so cold temperatures, mud, and the possibility of snow or ice on the trails are part of the picture. Runners should plan for winter layers and check organiser updates close to race day.
Yes. The event has been staged since 2022 and the 2027 edition is the sixth running. In 2026 there were 196 male and 84 female finishers, in 2025 there were 167 men and 57 women, and across all editions the race has recorded 1,098 finishers, 809 men and 289 women.
