Runners follow the coastline of Shodoshima in the Seto Inland Sea over a course full of ups and downs, with wide water views for most of the way. All three distances start and finish in front of the former Tonosho Town Hall, the full marathon at 09:30, the half at 09:50 and the 10km at 10:10. Traffic is restricted on only part of the route, so runners stay on the pavement in two-abreast formation and keep to the sea side in both directions. Free somen noodles, a bento box and drinks wait after the finish, and the organisers hand out division prizes along with a generous spread of flying prizes and special awards. Many runners return with sightseeing plans, drawn by the warm welcome the town lays on.
