Overview

The Trigono Trail Run takes place over the last weekend of October in the Triangular Forest Complex of the Municipality of Orestiada, in the Evros region of northern Greece. The programme opens on Saturday evening with two night trail races of 30 km and 7 km that start and finish at the DRYMOS refuge at Mpara, and closes on Sunday morning with a 22 km mountain bike race. Runners and riders follow forest singletrack and dirt roads past the abandoned settlement of Gyaliá and up to Pyramida 393 on the Greek-Bulgarian border before returning to the refuge. The weekend finishes with a traditional feast at the refuge, where free fasolada and boiled goat are served to all participants.

Terrain

Mainly forest singletrack through the Triangular Forest Complex of the Municipality of Orestiada, run at night.

Route

From the DRYMOS refuge at Mpara the route follows the path to Mantenia, then to Gyaliá and up to Pyramida 393 on the Greek-Bulgarian border, returning through Gyaliá to finish at the DRYMOS refuge.

Race Day

Saturday 31 October: race pack collection at the DRYMOS refuge from 14:00 until one hour before the start, night trail races start at 18:00 (30K) and 18:30 (7K), followed by the traditional feast. Sunday 1 November: race pack collection from 09:00, MTB 22K starts at 10:00.

Recovery

A traditional post-race feast at the refuge with free fasolada and boiled goat, plus an easy hike on Sunday 1 November at 10:00 visiting the abandoned settlement of Gyaliá, the church of Agios Athanasios, the Stone of Fertility and the old fortress on the Greek-Bulgarian border. A shorter 6 km option with a car return to the refuge is available on request.

Finisher certificateCups are awarded to the top three men and women overall in each race, and all finishers receive a commemorative medal. No medical certificate is required, but every runner is advised to have a medical check before the event and competes at their own exclusive responsibility.

ParkingThe road to the refuge is asphalted and participants make their own way to the venue.

Public transportParticipants travel to the race venue at their own responsibility and there is no shuttle service. The road up to the refuge is asphalted, and the nearest town is Orestiada in the Evros regional unit of northern Greece.

Bag dropThere is a designated baggage storage area at the start, though the organisers accept no responsibility for damage, theft or loss of personal items. Medical cover is in place throughout the races with additional support from the Red Cross.

Before you enter

Bad weatherIn wet weather the organisers may add a waterproof jacket to the mandatory equipment list.

Minimum ageThe MANTENIA TRAIL 30K is open only to those who have turned 18. The MPARA TRAIL 7K and the MTB 22K accept entrants aged 16 and over, and anyone under 18 needs a signed parental or guardian consent submitted through the registration form.

Collecting your numberRace packs are collected at the start area, the DRYMOS refuge at Mpara in Pentalofos. For the Saturday night trail races collection runs from 14:00 until one hour before the start, and for the Sunday MTB race from 09:00 until one hour before the start.
