The race takes place on the satoyama hills that sit close to Hanno City in Saitama Prefecture, on a course that is deliberately short so that newcomers and less confident trail runners can take it on. Both the 14.4 km and 8.7 km routes mix woodland paths with genuine trail sections and a few viewpoints, which keeps experienced runners interested as well. Runners register and start at a special venue set up at Chōnenji Temple, follow arrow and ribbon markings through the hills, and are served a warming bowl of tonjiru pork soup once they finish. Entry is capped at 250 runners per distance and each race has its own time limit with checkpoints.
