Day six of the Southwest Series, a multi-day stage event put on by Mainly Marathons on the desert roads around Nipton in the California Mojave. Runners pick a marathon, half marathon, 10K or 5K on the day, and nothing carries a cut-off, so walkers and slower runners finish on the same terms as everyone else. The day closes with food and an award-winning medal, in the company of a group that cheerfully calls itself a loony running family. Entrants often come back for several days of the series in a row, and the same format runs across the other stops on the tour.
