Overview

The half marathon is the flagship race and the only one that tours the tsunami memorial landscape. Runners head through the central city district and pass close to the Miracle Single Pine, the lone pine that survived the 2011 tsunami.

The half marathon is open to high school students and older, the 3.7km to general entrants and middle school students, the 1km to elementary school students, and the fun run to elementary school students and older. All entrants must be healthy enough to complete their chosen distance and must agree to the entry terms.

Terrain

City streets through the central district and paths within the Takatamatsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park, on an asphalt road surface.

Route

The course runs through the centre of Rikuzentakata and comes within close range of the Miracle Single Pine, then loops through the preserved tsunami remains of the Great East Japan Earthquake. At the 6.3 km point it reaches the 'Place Overlooking the Sea' inside the Takatamatsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park, a place of remembrance for those lost in the 2011 disaster, where runners are asked to slow to a walk and bow in silence. Start and finish are both at Yume Arena Takata.

Race Day

Opening ceremony at 8:30. No race-day registration desk: number cards, timing chips and other items are posted to the address given at entry about two weeks before the event.

First aid on courseA first aid station is set up and the organiser takes out sports injury insurance for participants. At the 6.3 km point of the half marathon, the 'Place Overlooking the Sea' in the Takatamatsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park is a place of remembrance for those lost in the Great East Japan Earthquake, and runners are asked to walk slowly and bow in silence there.
