The first Spessartultra is a 46.8 km trail race from Sailauf in the Bavarian Spessart, run as six laps of a 7.8 km circuit with about 244 m of climbing on each lap. The ground is a mix of gravel tracks, forest paths and one short stretch of asphalt, and the course is marked throughout, with a GPS track released a few days before race day. The field is capped at just 20 runners, the time limit is 10 hours, and the organiser states plainly that everyone runs at their own risk. Entries are taken by WhatsApp message to the organiser, with a small intermediate refreshment point at the lap area where runners use their own drinking vessel, a bag drop, parking and an honesty-box coffee fund.
